Motorway tolls France – information on tolls, toll tunnels and toll roads

In France, a toll system is used on toll motorways and the toll is paid when passing through the toll gates. Tolls for your planned journey can be easily determined using the route planner on autoroutes.fr or the PDF price list on the same site (www.autoroutes.fr).

The price category of the vehicles is determined by the height of the vehicle, the number of axles and the maximum permissible weight. Cars and trailers are the second cheapest category after motorcycles, namely vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes and up to 2 metres in height.

In addition to the classic payment methods such as cash, credit card, payment/fuel card or electronic unit, the free-flow system can be used on several motorways, and charges can be paid without stopping, via a mobile app, the Liber-t on-board unit or via the Internet. To facilitate payment, the Liber-t electronic system (www.telepeagelibert.com) (distributed by e.g. bipandgo.com) is available to regular motorway users, The main advantages of the Liber-t on-board unit are its validity on the entire French motorway network, seamless passage through toll gates in the “T” lanes, detailed overview of the sections travelled and the possibility to choose the fare. The toll system identifies the passing vehicle and charges can be settled from a credit card registered on the number plate or from an electronic toll unit account, or an invoice is sent to the vehicle owner’s address. The free-flow tollgates are currently installed on the A4 Boulay and A10 Tours Nord motorways, with test operations on the A311 Dijon Sud and A36 Fontaine motorways. The free-flow system is also planned to be introduced on the A13, A14 and A79 motorways.

Thanks to the interoperability, the on-board unit of the Italian Telepass toll system (www.telepass.com) can also be used to pay tolls in France.

For vehicles with a maximum authorised weight of more than 3.5 tonnes, two categories have been established, namely vehicles with two axles and vehicles with three or more axles. An overview of the categories of vehicles is available on autoroutes.fr. The toll for vehicles with a maximum authorised weight of over 3.5 tonnes is paid in the same way as for passenger cars, directly at the toll gates, using one of the usual payment methods. On certain days, vehicles with a maximum authorised weight of over 7.5 tonnes are prohibited, a list of restrictions can be found on demarches.interieur.gouv.fr (www.service-public.fr).
