Motorway tolls Italy – information on toll collection and tunnel tolls
Motorway tolls in Italy are collected in the form of tolls, which can be paid in cash and by debit or fuel card, directly at toll gates. Not only cars and lorries but also motorcycles are subject to tolls.
There are two categories of two-axle vehicles, one for motorcycles and vehicles up to 1.3 metres above the front axle, and the other for vehicles over 1.3 metres above the front axle. The price categories for larger vehicles and trailers (www.autostrade.it) are determined by the number of axles and are available on autostrade.it.
On the Pedemontana Lombarda motorway north of Milan, on the A36, A59 and A60 motorways, tolls are collected on a free-flow system without tollgates. Tolls can be paid using a mobile app, a Telepass unit or by post-payment via the internet. The location of the free-flow toll motorways is shown on the map and more information is available at apl.pedemontana.com.
For those who use the motorway regularly, Telepass on-board units and Viacard prepaid cards are available to facilitate payment, which are also compatible with the French, Spanish and Portuguese toll systems. An overview of payment methods is available at autostrade.it, information on the Telepass unit is available at telepass.com.
For a motorway map and toll calculator, see autostrade.it.
If a driver leaves a toll road without paying at a tollgate, he/she must pay the toll for the journey either at a tollgate or via the Internet. The toll for the A36 Pedemontana Lombarda motorway, which has a free-flow system, is paid in a similar way. For details, see the Unpaid tolls page (www.autostrade.it) on the autostrade.it website (www.autostrade.it).
If you leave the motorway without paying the toll, you will have to pay a surcharge.
