Toll Norway – information on tolls, payment options

In Norway, tolls are charged on motorways and most expressways, as well as on certain tunnels and bridges. Tolls are collected when the vehicle passes through a tollgate, and payment is made on the basis of an invoice, an on-board unit extract using AutoPass or the vehicle’s photographed registration number when the vehicle passes through a tollgate. The toll invoice is sent via the on-board unit’s intermediary, Epass 24, or directly to the vehicle owner’s address.
Motorcycles are free to pass through the undersea Atlantic Tunnel (Atlanterhavstunnelen), vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are required to use the AutoPass on-board unit.

Vehicles are divided into several categories to determine the tolls. The first category covers vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and all M1 vehicles. The second category applies to all vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes, except M1 vehicles. These two categories are further subdivided according to environmental impact, engine unit or vehicle emission class.

Vehicles registered abroad must be registered in the appropriate environmental class in order to be correctly classified.
Register on epass24.com for environmental differentiation.
An overview of passing gates is available on epass24.com.
The invoice is available on epass24.com and will be sent to the address of the vehicle owner.
For stays longer than two months, the use of an AutoPass unit is recommended.
Information on payment options is available at autopass.no.

Motorcycles, certain emergency vehicles, public transport vehicles and, on some roads, drivers with reduced mobility can use the roads without paying tolls. The exact wording of the rules can be found on the exemptions page (www.autopass.no).

The breakdown of vehicles according to the “Environmental Distinction” rule also includes categories of zero-emission and hybrid vehicles. Based on this classification, a discount of up to 100% is available for these vehicles at some toll gates. To obtain the discount, you must pay via the on-board unit and the AutoPass system. The discounts available can be found on the websites of the tollgate operators, via the links on the tollgate map (www.vegvesen.no).

Tolls are calculated according to the number of tollgate passages. The AutoPass on-board unit can be used to identify the vehicle. If a vehicle passes through the gate without an on-board unit, the vehicle is photographed and the toll invoice is sent to the owner’s address.
