Toll Portugal – information on toll collection and payment options

In Portugal, tolls are collected at the toll gates and apply to all types of vehicles, i.e. motorcycles, cars and vehicles with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes. Vehicle categories are divided according to the height above the front axle and the number of axles. Motorcycles and passenger cars with a height of up to 1.1 metres above the front axle are in the first price category, and two-axle vehicles with a height of over 1.1 metres are in the second price category.

In Portugal, toll roads are divided into two types according to the method of payment: on some motorways, manual payment is allowed and cash or credit card payment is possible (currencies and card issuers are not specified), while in other cases tolls can only be paid automatically using the EasyToll system (a payment card linked to the vehicle registration number), Via Verde on-board unit (hire on deposit, for temporary use), prepaid Toll Card or unlimited 3-day Toll Service card (vehicles up to 2 axles or 1.1 m above the front axle). An overview of the payment options is available on portugaltolls.com, and an overview of the toll road layout is available in the form of a map (infraestruturas.maps.arcgis.com) or a leaflet (www.tolls.eu).
