Switzerland

The motorway vignette is compulsory on all first and second class motorways for vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes and for motorcycles and is only sold as an annual vignette. The obligation to display a valid vignette applies to all vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and trailers. Trailers up to 3.5 tonnes in gross vehicle weight must be marked with a motorway vignette in the same way as towing vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. If the total weight of the trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes, it depends on the definition of the vehicle whether the toll is payable by vignette, toll unit or flat rate. The vignette is sold in physical form and can be purchased at the usual points of sale, such as petrol stations, Swiss post offices, etc. An overview of the points of sale for foreigners can be found on the Points of Sale page (bazg.admin.ch). The electronic sticker will be available from the first quarter of 2023.

The vignette can only be replaced in case of a printing error on the vignette or damage to the windscreen of the vehicle. For foreign vehicles, the replacement of damaged markings is the responsibility of the customs office, and for vehicles registered in Switzerland, the insurance company will take care of the compensation. Information on how to replace a damaged motorway vignette can be found on bazg.admin.ch, under the Returns/Refunds and Replacements section (bazg.admin.ch).

Vehicles with military plates, police cars and some other vehicles used to assist citizens can be driven without a vignette. Exceptions are also made for test vehicles, vehicles for driving tests, fixed trailers, trailers and wagons for motorcycles, certain tractors and certain other vehicles. For detailed information, see the Exemptions paragraph (bazg.admin.ch) on bazg.admin.ch.

For vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes, there are several toll payment methods available, depending on the country of registration and the type of vehicle. The HVC on-board toll unit is designed for vehicles registered in Switzerland, this unit is optional for vehicles registered abroad, and toll payment can be made via the terminal using the vehicle ID registered to the vehicle. For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes used for the carriage of passengers, caravans, tractors and some other vehicles, tolls can be paid by a one-off flat-rate fee. Information on tolls for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (bazg.admin.ch) is available on bazg.admin.ch.

In the south of the country, on the Italian border, there are two toll tunnels, the St Bernat tunnel and the Munt la Schera tunnel.
